Treating Duchenne with corticosteroids

Treatment with corticosteroids has been shown to increase muscle strength in children affected by Duchenne4

Corticosteroid therapy, along with other improvements in Duchenne management, has positively impacted the natural history of the disease and been shown to delay disease milestones

A panel of experts convened by the CDC, in collaboration with multiple organizations, recommends corticosteroids as part of a treatment plan for patients with Duchenne.4

The CDC guidelines make the following recommendations regarding the initiation of corticosteroid therapy4,5:

  • The 3 phases of motor function in Duchenne (making progress, plateau, and decline) should contribute to the decision-making process5
  • Begin steroid regimen4:
    — Before substantial physical decline
    — After discussion of side effects
    — After nutrition consultation
  • An intervention of corticosteroids at a later stage is still beneficial to delaying disease progression, extending survival, and maintaining quality of life5
